President Bush Speaks Out Again About Social Security
March 10th 02:50:32 PM

At the National Newspaper Association Government Affairs Conference: The long-term budget challenge is -- it really has to do with mandatory spending, what's called mandatory spending. That's code word for Social Security and Medicare. Baby boomers like me are getting ready to retire. My retirement age happens in 2008, by the way, which is aligned perfectly. (Laughter.) I talked about the issue last year. I'm going to keep talking about the issue. The job of a President is to confront problems -- that's why you put me up here -- is to deal with problems, not to pass them on or hope somebody else takes care of it.   And we have a problem with Social Security and Medicare. We've got a lot of people retiring, and not enough people paying into the system. We've been promised a lot of benefits, our generation, better benefits than the previous generation. And so Congress needs to join me in setting aside all the needless politics in Washington, D.C., to come together and to present a solution to the American people, so we can say we've done our job. I'm looking forward to working with Congress.   I said in the State of the Union, I want people at the table. I meant it. I want Republicans and Democrats to come to the table, to come up with a solution. Part of the solution is going to be -- the best way to describe it is like an automobile, if you're speeding, you slow your car down to get to the speed limit. You don't put it in reverse. We can fix the problem. We can come together and show the American people we're capable of dealing in a bipartisan way.

Getting Published
March 09th 10:42:44 AM

Congratulations to Elyse Braner who continues to do an amazing job for S4 in the New England region. Today she's published in the Smith College Sophian. In her article, Changing Policies for a Changing America, she writes about how Social Security reform is necessary and feasible because of the changes in American society. Check it out!

Waking the Dead: After the Election, Could Social Security Get Congress. Attention?

According to Susan Ferrechio of Congressional Quarterly, Congress and the Bush administration could make a new push for Social Security reform after the Fall elections. Other news reports have also indicated a renewed reform effort in 2007.

According to Ferrechio, newly elected House Majority Leader John A. Boehner, R-Ohio, admits that Social Security changes will not be considered anytime soon, but says he's willing to make a push for what President Bush wants — later.

"I think we ought to set about the work of getting ready to do this next year," Boehner said Tuesday. "And that means laying groundwork and having serious conversations among legislators on both sides of the aisles and in both chambers."

So, get ready for Round Two of the battle over individual accounts, provided that Republicans do well on Election Day.

The Trust Fund's Not the Only Retirement Fund Being Raided by the Government
March 08th 02:18:32 PM

The Washington Post reports that the government is now raiding the Civil Service Retirement Fund. "The Treasury Department has started drawing from the civil service pension fund to avoid hitting the $8.2 trillion national debt limit. The move to tap the pension fund follows last month's decision to suspend investments in a retirement savings plan held by government employees." The government promises to pay the money back.

What We're Up Against
March 06th 01:38:36 PM

The Capital Research Center released a great article about the enemies of reform. The most promising lesson to draw from the piece is how close the reform movement came to getting reform despite the all out of efforts of anti-reform activists. Despite their work, the nation acknowledges that a crisis is looming. We have no doubt that hard working students with little money themselves will win the day because the facts are on our side. Despite all the work of the opponents of reform, they have no plan on how to save social security. We do. The crisis is coming and the only sustainable solution is personal accounts.

Cheney Talks About Social Security
March 02nd 01:54:51 PM

Some of his remarks from the AP: "The American dream begins with saving money and that should begin on the very first day of work," "With an aging population, and a steadily falling ratio of workers to retirees, the system is on a course to eventual bankruptcy," "There will always be a wagon load of excuses for ignoring the problem of entitlements, but Americans have a right to expect more out of the nation's leaders, especially when it comes to Social Security and other defining national promises."

HAPPY BIRTHDAY S4!
March 01st 01:10:05 PM

IMGP0258 S4 is officially one year old today! This time last year Patrick Wetherille and Jonathan Swanson joined together to form Students for Saving Social Security. They realized the Social Security debate lacked balance and that the voices of those most affected by the system--the young--were being shut out of the debate. In just one short year, S4 has has established over 260 chapters in all 50 states and recruited thousands of members nationwide! Just imagine the success we will achieve in the year ahead! Thanks to all our members for making this a great first year, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY to all of us!

Biased Accounts
February 24th 01:43:20 PM

Want to know one reason why the reform effort was derailed last year? The Free Market Project says you need to look no further than the media. According to the TMP Report the five major networks gave personal accounts overwhelmingly negative coverage.  Negative stories outweighed positive ones by a margin of 2 to 1, and four of the five networks "gave more air time to the liberal position than to explaining economic realities."
