CPAC Fun
February 21st 11:47:58 AM

Now that we have the CPAC pictures uploaded to the website, a quick follow-up on CPAC:

ostrich air

S4 handed out the ever-popular dum-dum candy (Don't be a dum-dum, support PRA's) 100 grand candy bars (amount of $$ in your PRA) t-shirts, frisbees, stickers - and even signed up over 500 people!! It was a very successful weekend - the ostrich got lots of attention and Jo Jensen did an awesome job on the student activism panel, where she challeneged students to work hard on the issues they're passionate about- like Social Security reform!!

S4 def stood out amongst the crowd of other conservative-minded organizations!

New York Sun Blasts Clinton On Social Security
February 21st 11:33:51 AM

Here's an excerpt of a refreshing editorial from the New York Sun:

"Mrs. Clinton evidently supports perpetuating a benefit that doesn't really
help anyone and also believes teenagers should be allowed to drop out of
high school if they want. Maybe she's right, maybe not. One solution would
be to let the market decide by allowing people to invest their Social
Security deductions in private accounts of their own. The accounts would
be heritable by anyone, solving one problem with the current $255 payout -
it can only go to a surviving spouse or child, leaving other family and
friends in the lurch if someone dies without a suitable payee."

S4 Meets Pat Boone!
February 17th 10:36:27 AM

Pat Boone

Last week at CPAC, S4 was pleasantly surprised by a visit from American music icon Pat Boone. Mr. Boone is a spokesman for 60 Plus, a non-partisan seniors advocacy organization that lists reforming Social Security through personal accounts as one of its top two priorities. The S4 team was thrilled to meet Mr. Boone and discuss Social Security reform and the importance of fixing the system for our generation.

When Pat saw the notorious S4 screw, a symbol of what could happen to young people if they don't act to reform the system, he remarked that S4 might want to change its name to S5. Screwed Students for Saving Social Security? Hmm... It could be a more accurate name if Congress keeps doing nothing, but we're not quite ready to change our name yet.

AARP Supports Investing the "Trust Fund"
February 15th 01:39:55 PM

That's right AARP has released a piece arguing that the surplus be invested in a way to increase its return. They just don't want individual Americans to own and control the investing. Rather they say The Government should be the one responsible for making wise investments.

Scary Fact
February 13th 11:58:02 AM

According to an article I was reading in the Los Angeles Times every 20 hours the government spends $1.3 BILLION on Social Security benefits... and the Baby Boomers haven't even retired yet.

From Dick Cheney's Remarks At CPAC
February 10th 01:29:58 AM

Let me also thank the members of Congress who are here this evening, and all of the distinguished guests, longtime friends that I see here at the head table. I also want to thank the young people from the group Students for Saving Social Security -- a new organization that already has members nationwide. These young citizens remind all of us that their generation deserves a Social Security system that is on firm financial ground -- and those of us in government have a responsibility to get the job done right. (Applause.)

CPAC Tomorrow
February 08th 08:44:52 PM

Starting tomorrow thousands of students descend on Washington for CPAC 2006, and S4 is going to be right there with them. We know that many of our members will be there representing their respective schools, come by and meet the S4 gang. We are cosponsoring this event so we will have a booth set up (with candy, even). We'll also be taking pictures of Americans' mad faces when they get upset about Congress's inaction on reform. Check out these already taken. Make sure to check back here throughout the day and week for more to come. Also, look for our own Jo Jensen on the activism panel right before Newt Gingrich's speech.

S4 Published in the Wheeling News-Register
February 08th 08:33:09 PM

S4's Nicola Moore had a great letter published in the News-Register, in it she calls on West Virginia Senator Robert Byrd to be more like Senator Rick Santorum and face the realities of the coming Social Security crisis.
