October 04th, 2005White House Still Committed on Social Security
October 04th 12:32:58 AM
The Cato Institute notes that the Administration remains committed to reform:
On Thursday morning, White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan made it clear that the President remains dedicated to Social Security reform. "It is a priority that only gets worse with time and only becomes more costly with time. The President believes it needs to get done. He'll continue to lead on that issue," McClellan said.
Asked about the fiscal feasibility of making the transition to private accounts, McClellan said, "It's something you can't afford not to address...because when we're talking about the long-term challenges to our budget, you have to look at entitlements and you have to address that mandatory spending equation.... Each year that you wait, it only-it costs an additional $600 billion a year. That's why it's so important to move forward now and get it addressed."

October 04th 12:24:39 AM
Daniel Geary a research assistant at the American Enterprise Institute wrote a good piece recently about the need for reform.
He writes:
"With rent, taxes, bills, and the occasional happy hour, saving for retirement isn't that easy. And for people with children, debts, or high medical expenses, it is even harder. This is precisely why giving young people the option of personal accounts makes so much sense.
With the amount of money that my employer and I pay in Social Security taxes this year, I could open an IRA or start making private pension contributions. Just $3,000 invested today in a conservative portfolio of stocks and bonds-given an average annual return of 5%-would result in almost $27,000 45 years from now. Making similar investments on a yearly basis would make for a sizeable retirement nest egg. Moreover, if actual Social Security taxes could go towards personal accounts, saving for retirement would be an option for everyone-regardless of income."

October 04th 12:20:11 AM
We've been having a lot of success getting stories in campus papers. Jonathan Swanson got mentioned in the Yale New Journal, Patrick Wetherille was written about in the Haverford News, Adam Nicholson had S4 featured in the Patrick Henry Herald. Have an event at your campus or talk to a reporter at your school paper. Get the story out there: Young people are fired up about personal accounts. We want ownership.

September 29th, 2005Congress Needs to Monkey-around with Our Money
September 29th 03:53:20 PM
The best Social Security video ever. We'd be better off having monkeys in charge of Social Security rather than Congress. Maybe instead of telling them to stop monkeying around with the trust fund, we should tell to monkey around, and give us personal accounts!

Yankee fans and Sox nation agree on one thing!!!
Students for Saving Social Security, a non-partisan, grassroots organization on over 230 college campuses in all 50 states, will rally in Harvard Square, Cambridge, MA to illustrate our intense focus on an issue crucial to our generation. Americans under 30 currently pay one out of every eight dollars we earn into a structurally flawed system. The theme of the event is Yankee fans and Red Sox nation setting aside their differences to support this essential reform. We ask if Yankee fans and Red Sox fans can set aside their differences, why can’t Democrats and Republicans do the same thing?
Who: Students for Saving Social Security (www.SecureOurFuture.org)
What: Rally where Yankee fans and Red Sox nation set aside their differences to advocate their unqualified support for Social Security Reform.
