S4 In USA Today

Ryan Lynch, our Communications Director, today, had an op-ed in the USA Today!

Social Security fixes

Ryan Lynch, Students for Saving Social Security - Arlington, Va.

I am disappointed in USA TODAY's editorial "Social Security: Easy to fix, but where's the political courage?" As answers to the approaching shortfall, it suggests raising the retirement age, lifting the contributory cap and slowing the growth of benefits. To be clear, each of these represents either an increase in taxes or a decrease in benefits (Nov. 14).

The real problem is that money does not grow within the Social Security system. Because we do not have an element of investment in our retirement program, we are forced to increase the payroll tax quite often. These increases drag the economy and encumber the welfare of future generations.

Young people understand this, and it is not due to political maneuvering that we support personal accounts in Social Security. Finding a way to introduce investment might not be an easy task, but it is a fair approach supported by those with the most at stake.

Thank goodness there are young people that understand the need to make changes to SS! I put together a hypothetical scenario of what my SS contributions would be worth if I was able to put away MY contribution in a savings account that never yielded more htan 4% and...I probably don't have to tell you, it was eye opening! I am considering going back to school (to work on a master's degree) at the age of 35. Is there a chapter at U of North Dakota in Grand Forks?

Chris, it looks like we may have a new chapter there. You should get in touch with our activism director, Evan Dent: evan AT secureourfuture.org
