Nadine Ashbrook of Farmington is a "notch baby." When she applied for Social Security she said was short changed.
"We were penalized and it has never been up to par," she said Thursday at a town hall meeting with U.S. Representative Tom Udall at the Bonnie Dallas Senior Center.
"Notch babies," born between 1918 and 1924, are people who have never received their full benefit in the Social Security system. Because of the shortfall they average about $5,000 less in benefits than others utilizing the fund.
Personal Accounts would have given her a fair retirement and a legacy to leave her grandchildren

The current system is even more arbitrary than one size fits all central planning. Since I've been working with S4, I've heard many of these stories.
Status quo defenders often claim that SS is the best government program ever created. This allegedly good program still ruins the lives of people like Ms. Ashbrook.
If this is the best they can do, that strikes me as a condemnation of government programs more generally.
