This past Tuesday, S4 organized a discussion in North Carolina with Congressman David Price (D-4th) during one of his town hall events.
During the opening remarks he addressed his goals for the next term, but unfortunately did not include any proposals for reforming our Social Security system. Twenty or more college students in the district with some of the activists from FreeedomWorks engaged the Congressman on his ideas for the future of Social Security. Read on for more..During a number of questions the Representative had no answer. When asked why he supported reforming the Social Security problem during the Clinton Administration and why he has changed his views, he responded that 70 years is too far away for us to mess with it now. In an exchange of facts and myths the Congressman could not be changed on his views but was most responsive to the petition signed by over 500 young individuals in his district.
In this uphill battle to push for reform it starts with students talking to Members of Congress. To continue spreading the word about the benefits of Personal Accounts we must make it known to our Representatives that we have stake in the Social Security system and want the same benefits as those that we have elected to office.
Considering how many different elected officials have changed their views on addressing this problem we must continue to have our voices be heard. As young individuals we can confront this problem by setting up more meetings with our Congressman and writing our Senators on the need for creating a solution to solving this looming problem.
We must continue the good fight, we must continue to come together to secure our future. If you would like to participate in setting up your own town hall event or creating a petition to send to your Representative please contact us.
